Urgent: Claim Your Property Tax Savings Before March 14!

If you bought a home recently, you might be missing out on a property tax break—but there’s still time to fix that! The deadline to file for homestead exemption in Oklahoma is Friday, March 14 (usually on the 15th, but that lands on a Saturday this year), and it’s one of the easiest ways to lower your property taxes every year. Many homeowners assume they’re already getting this exemption, but unless you filed for it yourself, you could be riding on the previous owner’s exemption—or not receiving it at all. Here’s what you need to know to avoid overpaying on property taxes.

What Is Homestead Exemption?

Homestead exemption is a property tax reduction for homeowners who use their property as their primary residence. It lowers the taxable assessed value of your home by $1,000, which means you pay less in property taxes. In many cases, this translates to an annual savings of around $100 to $150, depending on your local millage rate. Over time, these savings add up!

Do You Need to File?

Check your county assessor’s website to see if you already have homestead exemption. You need to apply if:

✅ You haven’t filed since purchasing your home.
✅ You moved in the past year—exemptions don’t automatically transfer.
✅ You’re unsure if it’s in your name—if the previous owner’s exemption is still in place, you could lose it without warning.

How to Apply for Homestead Exemption in Oklahoma

It’s a free and easy process! Just follow these steps:

Step 2: Fill Out the Form

You’ll need to provide basic property details, including:

  • Your name and address
  • The property’s legal description (found on your deed or county assessor’s website)
  • Your signature, attesting that the information is correct.

Step 3: Submit the Form to Your County Assessor’s Office

Each county has different submission methods. You can:

📩 Mail it in
🏢 Deliver it in person
📧 Email it (if your county allows it!)

For Pottawatomie County, email your completed form to Assessor@PottawatomieCountyOK.gov.

For Oklahoma County, email your completed form to Stephanie.Sousa@OklahomaCounty.org.

For other counties, check with your local assessor’s office to see if email submission is allowed.

March 15 Deadline – Don’t Wait!

Filing for homestead exemption only takes a few minutes, but missing the deadline means waiting another year to get your tax savings. A simple form could keep an extra $100-$150 in your pocket every year—why miss out?
