Recently, faculty and staff of Shawnee Public Schools voted on two options for the 2018-19 academic calendar. The top choice among personnel who voted was approved by the school board at last night's monthly meeting. There will be a week-long Thanksgiving break, students will finish on Friday May 24, and teachers will return for a work day May 28, the Tuesday after Memorial Day. The alternative version would have had breaks with the typical length: three days at Thanksgiving and a day in April for snow make up or to "catch our breath" if not needed for make up. Students would have been out May 22 and teachers prior to Memorial day, May 23. ​Both calendars offered the same start date (August 10 for teachers and August 16 for students), the same faculty/staff professional days, and fall break and parent conferences in first quarter grouped together for an extended weekend/break. Both also have a day off in April for potential snow make-up day or a day for everyone to "catch their breath". Christmas/winter holiday break is the also the same in both versions.
